Located in Vancouver, BC, Mercantile has been actively investing in and assisting in the management of a variety of Western Canadian businesses since 1989. To date Mercantile has invested and managed in excess of $65 million in over 25 businesses and has attracted an equal or greater amount of co-investment capital for these enterprises. Mercantile employs a business philosophy based upon the inter-dependence of three guiding elements.  CAPITAL Targeting beyond start-up, “restarts” and emerging concept businesses, Mercantile invests its energy and capital in ongoing or expansionary working capital requirements. The target market, geographically located in Western Canada, focuses on comparative advantage, demographic driven and unique “concept” enterprises. An ideal business opportunity for Mercantile is an entity or a program that has straight forward metrics and is outside of the usual “private equity” investment mainstream. COMMITMENT While Capital is the point of entry, Commitment in the form of being supportive, hard working and persistent is the key to success in Mercantile’s world. From a financial strategy perspective, Mercantile’s professionals directly engage with management and are often very active in the development of the business. At Mercantile, our experience tells us that in the sector we choose to invest in we must be prepared to provide our Commitment in a measure commensurate with or greater than our Capital. RESULTS Results are primarily measured in financial terms, but in Mercantile’s view should also be measured in terms of how effective Mercantile and its Partners have been in developing worthwhile business initiatives with a focus on value growth. We believe that in addition to providing fair and equitable financial returns and participation to all stakeholders, it is important that we focus on Results in a broad sense.
